Why Mullingar?

The club would like to thank ex-players Tony Stubbs and Robin Sumnall for their contribution.

In the early 1960s initial contact with Mullingar RUFC was made by holidaying club members Jim Handley, then Newcastle’s fixture secretary, and John Sumnall. Both were holidaying in Southern Ireland. Whilst visiting the town of Mullingar a chance meeting with Mullingar RUFC Chairman and local GP Dr Trevor Winkworth created an opportunity to establish the tours and forge an alliance between the two clubs.
In 1963 the club toured to Mullingar RUFC and neighbouring Athlone RUFC. The following year Mullingar came to us - and so on. The first tour was organised by Ian (Bill) Matthews - who sorted a savings scheme for the Aer Lingus air fare, hotel and extras. On that first tour all Newcastle’s touring party wore a bow tie in Newcastle colours.
